Unleash your super brain to learn faster
First let’s not judge about the talk Jim Kwik gave us. I want to say is that actually, I’m quite impressed by his way of giving a speech. During his speech, he controls his tempo very well, and he sounds clear and energetic so that the audience does not get lost in the long talk. Secondly, he interacts with the audience all the time, and he use many discourse like “yes or yes?” to make sure they’re following his move. Hence, even though his speech is quite long and informative, the audience is still engaged till the end of the talk. I think these two strategies are both useful for us to learn from while giving a speech.

I think we shall get back to the points Jim wants to convey. In his speech, he emphasizes that human is always emotional; hence, if we want to learn something fast and effective, it’s important to create the right emotion in the process of learning. According to Jim, when information is intertwined with emotion, the information will be transformed into long term memory; for instance, some people when they hear a certain song, that song could immediately conjure up lots of childhood memory, as though they’re taken back to the old times. Therefore, when we try to learn new things, we have to make ourselves feel something, so that we could come back to it easily.

Another thing in his speech that impress me a lot is about belief. Jim says, you have to believe in yourself that you’re capable of achieve something. It’s interesting but true that our hearts often eavesdrop our brain. Once we set a limit for ourselves, we have an excuse not to make an effort on it. For instance, if someone keeps telling himself that he has problem remembering people’s name, then he’ll definitely not be able to remember the name of the next person he meets. I personally think this strategy Jim mentioned is quite important not only on learning but many aspects in our life. Take exercising for example, I always have to tell myself that I’m able to swim for 50 meter without stopping before I go to swim. Because it’s not a very easy task for me, by believing myself, I find that I can endure longer in the water and use my strength better than when I didn’t have some faith in myself.

I think Jim is quite persuasive in his speech, and when listening to him, I feel like having a strong motive to practice the strategies he teaches us in order to learn more and learn faster. (Since students’ main job is learning, by learning fast, it saves us much time, and we can do more things that we’re interested in.) However, I also doubt a little bit on how to make it work. I think it’s not easy to create the appropriate emotion while learning because sometimes learning takes huge amount of time, and our emotion changes rapidly. Sometimes we’re bored, sometimes we feel engaged, and it could depend on different subjects. Nevertheless, I do learn something from his speech, that is, always believing myself that I’m capable to master something that I endeavor to do.

Ps. If I could go back and pass on a message to my younger self, I would definitely tell myself that you’re awesome, please be more confident!
